1. AFFECTED PARTIES

All Environment, Health and Safety personnel

2. PURPOSE

The purpose of this document is to define the first-aid procedure for the GMP site. The first-aid procedure shall encompass the responsibilities and actions required for first-aid treatment. The first-aid procedure promotes the site philosophy for an early intervention program.

3. SCOPE

This procedure covers all accidents and incidents, requiring First Aid treatment, that occur to employees, contractors or visitors while on site.

4. RESPONSIBILITY \ BUSINESS RULES

All persons shall act in accordance with this procedure.

4.1 Managers and Supervisors shall ensure that all personnel are familiar with these procedures.

4.2 First Aid Personnel, appointed by the company, shall be responsible for controlling any situation requiring first-aid treatment.

4.3 The First Aid Coordinator shall be responsible to equip and maintain the First Aid Room.

4.4 The First Aid Personnel shall be responsible for maintaining the equipment in the First Aid kits.

5. PROCEDURE

5.1 First Aid Kits

5.1.1 First Aid Kits shall be kept stocked by First Aid Personnel, appointed by the company.

5.1.2 First Aid Kits shall be constructed of impervious material and capable of being locked.

5.1.3 Each First Aid Kit shall be clearly marked in compliance with local national standard.

5.1.4 First-aid kit shall comply with all relevant requirements set out in the local Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

5.2 First Aid Room

5.2.1 The First Aid Room shall be readily accessible, during working hours, to all everyone on site.

5.2.2 The First Aid Room entrance shall be clearly marked in compliance with local national standard.

5.2.3 The First Aid Room shall only be used for first-aid purposes and only contain equipment for first-aid purposes.

5.2.4 The First Aid Room shall comply with all relevant requirements set out in the local Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.

5.3 First- Aid Personnel

5.3.1 The First Aid Coordinator shall hold current Occupational First-aid or Nursing qualifications.

5.3.2 First Aid Personnel shall hold current first-aid qualifications approved by the site First Aid Coordinator.

5.3.3 First Aid Personnel shall be appointed in charge of first aid kits in designated area. Notices clearly showing the names and contact numbers of the first-aiders responsible for the first-aid kit shall be displayed throughout the buildings. The First Aid Coordinator shall be appointed in charge of the First-aid Room.

5.3.4 First Aid Personnel shall control any situation requiring first-aid treatment.

5.3.5 First Aid Personnel shall be responsible for the treatment of all injuries or illnesses until such time as ambulance personnel or doctors can take over the treatment.

5.4 First-aid Procedure

5.4.1 In the event of an accident or illness requiring treatment by First Aid Personnel, the following steps shall be followed.

5.4.2 Provide the necessary treatment to stabilise the injured employee.

5.4.3 If an ambulance is required the relevant First Aider shall ensure that Security is notified and they contact the Ambulance Service. They must also give the Security their contact details so that the Ambulance can contact them if required.

5.4.4 For serious injuries, relocate the injured employee to the First Aid Room to await the arrival of the ambulance. Only perform this task, if the casualty can be moved safely and if casualty is ambulant. If the casualty is not ambulant and not in any immediate danger (i.e. fire) they should not be moved until the ambulance arrives.

5.4.5 In the event of an injured employee requiring off site medical treatment the First Aider responsible for the employee shall notify the First Aid Coordinator. It shall be the responsibility of the First Aid Coordinator to decide who takes the injured employee off site. In the absence of the First Aid Coordinator, the First Aider responsible for the situation shall decide who transports the employee to the off site medical service. The Site preferred medical centre details are located in the First Aid Room. At all times the injured employee has the right to consult a doctor of their choice. Injured employees are to be transported using a company vehicle or taxi Private cars are not to be used.

5.4.6 If the injured employee leaves the site for further treatment the First-aid Coordinator and the area Manager need to be advised as soon as practicable. In all cases the first-aider performing the treatment shall fill out a Hazard Identification/Accident Investigation Report and print their name and sign it as the first aid attendant. If the injured person leaves the site for further treatment they should be given the medical information envelope (kept in first aid room) if possible.

5.4.7 As soon as completed copies of the Hazard Identification / Accident Investigation Report shall be sent to the EHS / Rehabilitation Coordinator for reporting and filing.

5.4.8   Accidents shall be reported and investigated according to SOP EHS-070, Hazard Identification and Incident Investigation Procedure. This is in accordance with the statutory requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.
