1. AFFECTED PARTIES

2. PURPOSE

This SOP provides information and guidelines for the management of blood and body fluid spills as a result of an accident.

Under the relevant Occupational Health and Safety Laws and Regulations for each state, employers have a duty of care to protect their employees in the workplace.

3. SCOPE

3.1     This SOP covers:

3.1.1 The equipment required for cleaning blood and body fluid spills that occur as the result of a workplace injury.

3.1.2 How to protect from transfer of blood borne pathogens whilst undertaking this activity.

3.1.3 How to dispose of and clean used equipment safely.

4. RESPONSIBILITY \ BUSINESS RULES

4.1     Only trained First Aiders and cleaners who have been trained in the blood spill procedures are to attempt to clean a blood spill.

4.2     No spill clean up is to be attempted if you have any doubt as to your ability to contain it successfully.

 4.3    Call EHS colleagues for assistance if required and report all spills via the Hazard Reporting system.

5. PROCEDURE

5.1     Equipment Required for Cleanup of a Blood or Body Fluid Spill

5.1.1 A bio hazard bucket (kept in first aid room).

5.1.2 Bio hazard plastic bags.

5.1.3 Scrubbing brush.

5.1.4 Yellow mop bucket.

5.1.5 Yellow mop (to include mop head and handle).

5.1.6 Plastic apron.

5.1.7 Heavy Duty Gloves.

5.1.8 Safety goggles.

5.1.9 Paper towelling.

5.1.10 Viraclean. This equipment is kept in the first aid room.

5.2     Ensure that injured or affected colleague is safe and receiving necessary treatment.

5.3     Call for extra first aiders if required to assist with spill. No spill is to be attempted if you have any doubt as to your ability to contain it successfully. Call EH&S for assistance.

5.4     Collect all relevant cleaning equipment from First Aid Room. Put on all protective clothing as provided before commencing the procedure. It is recommended you put on an extra pair of fitted gloves under the heavy duty ones for extra protection.

5.5     Take the bottle of Viraclean and gently flow a stream on the outside of the spill. Then gently allow a stream of Viraclean to cover the entire spill. This must be done carefully to avoid spreading the spill.

5.6     Then place the paper towel over the area and allow this to stand for fifteen minutes this will ensure all potential contaminants are eliminated.

5.7     Collect all paper towel and the contaminant and place in a Bio Hazard bag. Then proceed to clean the entire area ensuring any splashes are also cleaned. Use scrubbing brush if required. Put any more towels that are used in plastic bag.

5.8     All PPE must be discarded following clean up. If any personal clothing or if splashed with blood or body fluids during the process, will need to be washed with viraclean or disposed of.

5.9     All materials used are to be placed into a biohazard bag and disposed of in a yellow biohazard bin.

5.10   The first aider carrying out the clean up procedure is responsible to replace all equipment into the bucket ready for the next use
